Here are some indicators that will let you know if you need to give us a call to fix or replace your disposal.

• Is it leaking? If water is leaking from the disposal it more than likely needs a seal replaced but also could be a more serious problem. • Is your garbage disposal jammed? – If your garbage disposal is jammed you should not continue to trya and make it work. If you do you can cause the motor to burn up. • Does your disposal smell? – if some bad odors are coming from your disposal you can try putting lemons through it and see if that removes the odor. It is actually about that loud banging sound in your pipes often referred to as water hammer. This banging commonly happens whenever your washing machine or dishwasher stops filling and the valves close quickly. It can however also occur with faucets, toilets, and other fixtures. When the valve closes the flowing water in the pipe stops quickly and creates more pressure than your system is designed to handle and the energy produced  makes the pipe jump and bang against your houses framing or other structures.

Loosely secured pipes can make the water hammer problem worse. Less secured pipes vibrate more before striking against the frame. The hammering in addition to being aggravating to you is also bad for your pipes. The stress on the joints and pipes can lead to leaks.

How to Stop Water Hammer

There are two possible solutions to reducing or stopping water hammer.

1st solution: Securing the pipes.

In most cases it is easy to secure your loose pipes. You need to first find which appliance is causing the banging. To do this have someone turn on the water on the suspected appliance or fixture as you search for the pipe that is hammering.  The pipes are often in the basement or crawlspace.

If the pipes moves (more than a small vibration when the water backs up)  you need to add anchors to the pipe.  First secure the pipe to the floor, wall, or framing by adding appropriately sized pipe clamps or straps secure the pipe to the floor, wall or other wood framing. The clamps can be either metal or plastic but if using metal make sure they are the same material as the pipe in order to prevent corrosion.  It is a good idea if you are using straps to  add a piece of pipe insulation to help keep the pipe snug and add some shock absorption.

Securing the pipes should fix any minor cases of water hammer. If it does not  you need  an arrestor.

2nd solution: Installing Water Hammer Arrestors

 Water hammer arrestors designed for easy installation are single-fixture units that use compression fittings for splicing into the supply line of individual fixtures and appliances. In the case of  faucets,toilets, and dishwashers, the arrestors can be installed  between the water supply line and the fixture’s shutoff valve or between the shutoff valve and the supply riser or tubing leading to the fixture.  For washing machines arrestors screw right in between the water hoses and the shutoff valves. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions when installing arrestors on appliances with banging pipes. Appliances and fixtures that use  hot and cold water need an arrestor on each water line.

If needed you can get Arrestors designed for branch lines that can serve multiple fixtures or appliances. These come in solder-only, threaded and compression versions and must be sized and positioned correctly to work effectievly. Non-solder types can be replaced easily if the arrestor ever fails , but threaded arrestors still need a soldered fitting to screw into. Since branch water lines are usually concealed, standard arrestors should be installed by a licensed Greenville plumber.

Greenville Plumbing Maintenance Inside The House

•  To prevent hair and food debris from clogging drains you should replace broken and cracked strainers in sinks and tubs to prevent hair.
•  Inspect your sinks, tubs, toilets, and under sink pipes for leaks. If you find any make sure to give your Greenville plumbers a call at 864-663-6105 so that we can take care of them before they get out of control.
•  Inspect toilet tank and bowl for cracks or damage. If you find any cracks call KT Plumbing  to fix or replace immediately.
•  Check how your toilets flush. Does the handle have to be jiggled or held down in order to stop the water flow? If so parts should be replaced in order to save money on your water bill. This is a fairly easy task but if you would like our help give us a call.
•  Turn all water valves in house off and on to ensure they do not stick or accumulate mineral buildup.
•  Look at all your shower heads and clean off any mineral deposits by soaking them in vinegar overnight and gently scrubbing them.
•  For drains (including floor drains) that are not used very often pour a gallon of water down them to fill the trap and prevent odors from entering the house. Slow floor drains should be snaked to ensure they will carry away water quickly in the event of a flood. Snaking drains should be done by a professional plumber as improper use can cause damage to operator and/or your plumbing.
•  To ensure your home sump pump (if you have one) is operating properly by dumping a few buckets of water into the pit. The pump is working correctly if it quickly turns on, discharge the water and then shuts off without any problems.
• Flush your water heater  tank and checking the anode rod. Look for our next blog post for instructions on how to do this properly.

Greenville Plumbing Maintenance Outside The House

•  Check your yard drains for major soil corrosion or obstructions. Clean your gutter and downspouts. Pour some water down the downspouts to ensure they are flowing smoothly.
•  Turn on outside faucets and make sure water flows freely. Look for possible leaks. If the faucet drips you may have had a cracked pipe that needs to be replaced.
•  Inspect your vent pipes for bird nests or other obstructions.
